Jazz lovers take back the park
The concept grew from a desire to celebrate music in a safe environment.
Tsakane – Sindane Park was abuzz on Sunday as jazz fans gathered to enjoy good music at the inaugural Jazz Lovers Movement event.
Kgalane Malekane, chairperson of the Jazz Lovers Movement, says the concept grew from a desire to celebrate music in a safe environment.
“We know that in the festive season people always go out in search of good times,” Kgalane says.
“We figured that we could create these experiences for ourselves and our community using municipal parks.
“The idea is to share our collections with fellow jazz lovers.”
Kgalane explains that the line-up consists of 10 people who play music from their personal collections for an hour.
“We also want to disturb the flow of drugs in these parks,” he adds.
“If we use them appropriately, they will not be a playground for illegal activities.”
He believes their presence at Sindane Park helped to keep illegal activities at bay for the day.
“We are taking back our communities from criminals.
“It’s jazz against crime.”
He says this is also a chance for the community to make an extra effort to take care of their facilities.
“The idea is to go around and host the event at different parks in the metro.”
The Jazz Lovers Movement will hold their next event on Monday, January 1 at Sindane Park.
