Dancing with KwaThema

Nhlapo is looking to take dance to primary and pre-primary schools to get learners interested while they are still young.

Our Tango Dance Schools hosted a ballroom and Latin dance competition at the Soup Kitchen in KwaThema on December 9.

The competition saw students of the school showcasing their talents and their skills taught by dance instructor and founder of the school Penwell Nhlapho.

Nhlapho says although some of the students were accompanied by their parents, the turnout was disappointing.

“There was not much support from the community, only some parents came,” he says.

He also notes with sadness that there is not as much interest in dance in KwaThema as there was when he was growing up.

The competition saw students of the school showcasing their talents and their skills taught by dance instructor and founder of the school Penwell Nhlapho.

“The youth today is not interested in sports and exercise. They are exposed to things like drugs and liquor and would prefer not going out to playing a sport,” says Nhlapo.

To remedy this, Nhlapo is looking to take dance to primary and pre-primary schools to get learners interested while they are still young.

He says this will assist in creating variety in the sporting codes available to youth in townships because there is a strong focus on soccer.
