Getting to know Sipho Mguni (28) author of Fallen Petals – Love, Loss and Healing and Uhuru – The Pursuit For The African Dream.

Geluksdal – Sipho Mnguni (28), a poet and selfpublished author, chatted to African Reporter about his journey. He has published two books, Fallen Petals –Love, Loss and Healing and Uhuru – The Pursuit For The African Dream. Q: When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer? A: I started writing at the age of 13. I used to write rap songs and then went on to write poetry during my high school years. It was 2016 when I decided to make my full transition to poetry. In 2017 I wrote my first book titled Life After Matric – Finding Life’s Meaning and Riches. Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A: My writing is inspired by the people of the continent, my aim is to educate and empower society. I also write to challenge social norms and bring a different perspective to the ill realities of our country, and strive towards a better South Africa. Q: What is Uhuru about? A: The book is about how we can solve unemployment as a country without relying too much on government. It gives a basic knowledge on what we should do with the land after we have expropriated it and it is based on the philosophy that I am developing called Ubuntu Capitalism. The book explains how the philosophy can be practically applied to solve the social ills we have in our country.

Q: What inspired the book? A: I wanted to write a book that helps fight the scourges of xenophobia, unemployment and the abuse and killing of women and children. This book also speaks to African ingenuity and rekindles the spirit of ubuntu through finding affinity with each other. Q: What sets the book apart from other books? A: It gives practical solutions to real problems and provides a philosophy that is not yet taught to the world. The knowledge I am bringing is fairly new, although it is inspired by other writers and philosophers. Most importantly, the book gives the “know how” solutions we can use to solve a variety of social ills in the continent.

Q: What is the African dream you talk about in the book?

A: The African dream is the complete decolonisation of the African mind in all social contexts (religiously, socially, economically and politically) and the attainment of economic freedom of all African people, those in the continent and in the diaspora.

Q: What is the Black Integrated Economy?

A: The Black Integrated Economy is the systematic functioning of all black businesses in the community to form a single structure of businesses that will operate as a whole or as one and is the heart of the African dream.

Q: What are your biggest achievements to date?

A: In 2018, I hosted a poetry event called Black Mic Poetry and Music Sessions. The sole aim of the event was to create a platform for local poets to be economically empowered. I have performed my poems in and around Ekurhuleni. This year I performed at the Birchwood Hotel, where I shared the stage with Nimrod Nkosi. I was part of the National Library of South Africa Poetry Slam, where I made it to the top 10, chosen among 300 poets from around the country
