Remembering MacDonald Mathunjwa

Legendary actor MacDonald Ndodana Mathunjwa (72) died in the early hours of Monday morning at Pholosong hospital.

Kwa-Thema – Legendary actor MacDonald Ndodana Mathunjwa (72) died during the early hours of Monday morning at Pholosong Hospital.
The family has confirmed that he died of Covid-19 related complications.
Mathunjwa is known for his roles on local television and theatre productions.
He was featured on many drama and comedy series which included Generations, Yebo Mnakwethu, Instika, Soul City and Bone of Bones, Home Affairs, uGugu no Andile and Stokvel.
He worked alongside legends like the late Joe Mafela and Thembi Mtshali in the hit sitcom Sgudi ‘Snaysi.
Mathunjwa moved to Johannesburg with his late brother, Madoda Mathunjwa, to build a better life after both their parents died.

Opportunity to try your hand at acting

According to his daughter, Thully Mathunjwa, his first love was music and he enjoyed playing the keyboard.
He toured Europe and United States of America with cultural groups and helped discover talent in the performing arts.
Mathunjwa had a passion for the arts and was dedicated to giving back to his community of Kwa-Thema.
Before his death, he was working with local upcoming film-makers.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Sports, Recreation, Art and Culture in Ekurhuleni, Nomadlozi Nkosi said his legacy would live on.

 “We have lost our most gifted, humble and distinct thespian in the region who has always responded to our call when needed.

Local actor and bodybuilder Bafana Manake dies

Baba Mathunjwa’s passing came as a shock to us as we were still looking forward to working with him in developing the talent of our artists in the region.

“The City would like to send sincere condolences to his daughter, the family and the performing arts sector in the region as well as the rest of the country,” she said.

Mathunjwa contributed to the establishment of The Salvation Army Church in Kwa-Thema.
His memorial service will be held at the Kwa-Thema Community Hall from 8am on Saturday, and thereafter the cortege will leave for Vlakfontein Cemetery.
