Church 5km walk brings community together in Kwa-Thema
Church members and residents gathered for a 5km walk focused on fitness and fellowship.
Kwa-Thema – The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa in Kwa-Thema held its annual 5km walk on April 27. The walk was attended by the members and friends of the church.
Pastor Joe Mabena said the event is part of the church’s fellowship, helping members connect socially outside the normal services offered by the church.
He also said the event was aimed at helping members stay fit physically and spiritually.
“As a church, we should not focus on the spiritual side because we have members who are passionate about fitness, so we work together so they motivate other church members in keeping the body moving.”

“It is important for our members to partake in walks like these so they can have fun with their friends and families and improve their health and be happy too.”
Mabena explained that the funds raised will go to the church’s current project. One of the members, Maria Ramotsheki (69), said she was happy to be part of the walk, which allowed her to destress and have fun with other members.
She shared that she did not think she would finish the walk, but she did and felt rejuvenated.
“I encourage other elders to walk daily because it helps the body, and community walks are important, especially in our age, because we need to find ways to keep the body active.”

After the walk as part of the fitness activities, the participants did some aerobics. The organiser, Sibongiseni Skhosana, said the event was inspired by Mabena after Skhosana participated in the Comrades Marathon and wanted an event where members could participate.
As someone who competes in the Comrades, Skhosana shared that events like these can help runners start training for big competitions.
“I would like to thank everyone who participated in the walk and we had people from Tsakane, Duduza and Daveyton who came.
“As a church, we appreciate the support and special thanks to our sponsor, Tsipi-Noto,” concluded the organiser.
