St John’s trio tipped to shine at Easter Rugby Festival
With all eyes on the St John's Easter Rugby Festival and what talent might emerge, here are some standout players to watch from the hosting school.
St John’s College head of marketing and communications Jacqui Deeks revealed three standout players to watch at this year’s St John’s Easter Rugby Festival.

• Joshua Shannon:
Position: Loosehead prop
According to Jacqui, Joshua is the most influential player in the team.
“He is the captain of The Blues for this year and players look up to him. He has big dreams for the future and wants to take his rugby career further after school,” she said.

• Gerald van Wyk:
Position: Flyhalf
“Gerald is the vice-captain of The Blues. He has plenty of potential and is dangerous on attack with an eye for a gap. His kicking is also on the money. Like his captain, Gerald hopes to represent a provincial team in future,” she added.

• Malan du Plessis:
Position: Inside centre
“Malan has great ball-carrying abilities and will keep the defence on their toes. He wants to reach new heights in the sport this year,” Jacqui continued.
Jacqui added the school is also proud to introduce their coaches.
“The Blues head coach is Katleho Lynch. He is also a former SA U18 coach who has a wealth of rugby knowledge which he obtained working at the top level. Katleho will also be supported by two assistant coaches Graham Hill, a former coach at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Kurt Webster, a former Blue Bulls player.
“In addition, coach Sihle Ndlovu will focus on the players’ strength and conditioning while professional coach Theo Reinecke is a specialist analyst. Vusumuzi Mathonsi will be the team manager,” she said.
She concluded the coaches have been together for about five years with The Blues enjoying a lot of success.
