ZONKESIZWE – Zonkizizwe police are investigating a case of murder, after two toddlers, aged one and three, were found dead on Wednesday morning, and their mother is extremely ill.
The police were called to an abandoned building in a field in Zonkezizwe, after a passerby found the woman crying in pain on the ground.
She asked the passerby for help and he immediately alerted the police.
Sgt Rufus Tema, the communications officer for the Zonkizizwe police, told the GCN that the woman alleged that her husband had dumped her and the two children in the area between 7pm and 8pm the night before.
“She alleged that he gave them some juice to drink and then left them there,” said Tema.
“Not knowing the area, and due to the fact that it was dark and getting cold, the woman took the children to an old building she had spotted and they went to sleep.
“She further alleged that, when she awoke on Wednesday morning, she discovered that the children were dead.”
The police officers called in the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services and the children were declared dead on the scene.
The woman was transported to hospital, where she is in a stable condition.
“We believe that all three might have been poisoned,” said Tema.
The police have opened a murder docket and are still looking for the woman’s husband.
