Water level two restrictions for Johannesburg

Water throttling is here as Johannesburg joins Tshwane in throttling water supply.

THE City of Johannesburg joined Tshwane in reducing water supply on Monday, October 10, in response to residents’ failure to cut down on their consumption.

Johannesburg Water’s supply from Rand Water has been reduced by 15 per cent since the announcement of more water restrictions earlier in September this year.

Consumers are not making the required water consumption reduction required to avert a water supply crisis and therefore Johannesburg Water is now implementing water supply restrictions through reduction of outflows from reservoirs which will take place at different times in selected areas daily. This is termed as water level two restrictions.

Ekurhuleni has introduced a 10 per cent punitive rate as current water restrictions failed to stem usage. In August‚ the water department issued a government gazette compelling municipalities to reduce consumption by 15 per cent. However‚ the response from consumers has not been satisfactory.

Johannesburg Water is constantly monitoring demand and throttling is done as and when there is excessive demand. Areas affected can expect supply during off peak hours. The current situation can be salvaged by all consumers restricting their use of water so there can be enough for all, reporting contraventions and reporting all water leaks.

In a service alert‚ the city advised: “Roodepoort and surrounding areas‚ due to high consumption‚ we are throttling the system in the area to save water”.
