Consumers tight up belts as cost of living escalates

The RECORD asked Albertonians if they can still afford to entertain themselves in the midst of the country’s poor economic state.

SELLANDENE LOUW: “No, I now have to think twice because baby things are expensive and one has to have your priorities straight. As a parent you have to focus on spoiling your child rather than spending money fruitlessly.”

WITH the state of South Africa’s economy depressed and the country’s inflation and the rate of unemployment being at its peak, the RECORD asked Albertonians is they can still afford little spoils for entertainment and luxuries.

These are their views:

SHAUN NIENABER: “I wouldn’t deprive myself from having fun simply because of the state of our economy. I still do go out now and again, except that now we get to spend a little more that we should.”
ELIJAH MAWAMBA: “It is a little hard to spend money without having to expect anything in return, which is why I don’t spend money on entertainment. The least that one could do is to save money for rainy days.”
MELISSA WALDECK: “I can’t go out as I used to because the cost of living is now too high. Things have gone up and I find it hard to make ends meet. Instead of visiting the places that I used to visit a year ago, I now go to cheaper places for entertainment.”
SARAH MDLULI: “Entertainment is the last thing on my mind while I have to think of my family in eradicating poverty. Due to the high cost of living I have had to downgrade in my ways of doing things.”
