EMPD made 265 arrests over the weekend

Weekend operations in the City of Ekurhuleni yields 265 arrests, including 245 drunk drivers.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) conducted special operations over the weekend from August 28 to August 30 where they arrested 265 suspects and recovered eight reported stolen vehicles.

Together with SAPS they also 136 taverns for Covid-19 compliance.

“During roving roadblocks in the East, North and Southern regions of the City, intoxicated male with female motorists between the ages of 20 and 59, had to be temporarily removed from the roadways,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD Spokesperson.

A total of 53 intoxicated drivers were apprehended in Actonville, Benoni, Daveyton, Duduza, Etwatwa, Springs and Tsakane areas.

In the Northern region, 60 intoxicated motorists found in Kempton Park, Thembisa, Clayville and Olifantsfontein areas, were locked up and 23 shebeens, visited. 

“Meanwhile in the Southern region, 26 driving while under the influence of alcohol in Alberton, Germiston and Katlehong areas, were arrested and 63 taverns visited,” said Mokheseng.

The EMPD Specialised Services Members from different units nabbed 106 drunk drivers.  According to him, only nine taverns complied with the Disaster Management Act, under Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

In Boksburg, Kempton Park and Thembisa areas, 20 wrongdoers were also arrested for various crimes. 

Eight reported stolen vehicles were recovered in the Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong areas before they were impounded to the SAPS yard in Van Ryn’s Deep in Benoni for safekeeping.

“All detainees facing charges of malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession and dealing in narcotics, were escorted to different police stations and they are expected to appear at relevant Magistrate’s Courts soon,” he concluded.
