Murder suspects apprehended after chase

Two suspects were arrested following a fatal shooting that took place on Delphinium Street in Brackenhurst.

Brackendowns SAPS, CPF and security companies responded to reports of shooting in Brackenhurst around 14:00.

The officers and security officers from CPS, Fox, ADT and Sentinal Security, as well as AfriForum, joined hands on the scene of the shooting to search for the suspects involved.

While they were busy, medical personnel responded to the shooting and declared the victim dead on scene.

During their investigation, video footage of a black Honda fleeing the scene was retrieved. Cartridges on the crime scene indicated a 40-calibre firearm was used.

An officer from CPS Security was stationary near the crime scene when he heard the shots.

“Moments after the shots, he noticed the Honda racing past him, skipping the stop street,” said WO Gerhard Cornelius, spokesperson for Brackendowns SAPS.

“He decided to follow the Honda. The Honda, with three African male occupants, kept speeding towards Kliprivier Road and skipped over a red light towards the Mall of the South.

He chased after them, calling for back-up. Several security companies and the CPF responded.

“The Honda then drove onto Kromvlei Road towards the R59. The CPS member in the meantime flagged a SAPS K9 Unit vehicle and they also gave chase, and as they asked for back-up, they were joined by Kliprivier SAPS members.”

The Honda was pulled over and one of the occupants jumped out and ran away. The other two suspects were apprehended.

A firearm, a black 40-calibre Sig-Sauer pistol with three rounds, was recovered on scene, as well as more 9mm live rounds.

With the video footage placing the Honda at the scene, the suspects were arrested and charged at Brackendowns SAPS.

The firearm, ammunition and vehicle were handed in as evidence. The suspects will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.

“It was a sad day that a life was lost but it was exceptional work done by all, especially the quick response from the CPS Security officer,” said Cornelius.

Tyron van der Merwe, sales director of CPS Security, said: “We commend our reaction operations manager, Nardus Hollander, for his quick actions and bravery.

“A special thanks to the Johannesburg K9 Unit, Brackendowns and Kliprivier SAPS and Brackendowns CPF for assistance.”
