Alberton Bowls celebrates golden jubilee

Alberton Bowling Club gathered to celebrate five decades of history.

Alberton bowlers and their guests enjoyed the celebration of their 50th year with some bowls, dinner and dance on November 27 at the Alberton Bowling Club.

With excitement, club president Engela Gerber welcomed the attendees with Ekurhuleni Bowls president Craig Hall, also a member of Alberton Bowls Club.

The board of the club consists of Lucas du Plooy, Farrell Coetzee, Ray van Niekerk, Maria de Sousa, Engela Gerber, Beata Coetzer, Marius Coetzee and Japie Ferreira.

Hall congratulated the club on the achievement of reaching a memorable milestone.

Over the 50 years, the club has produced many top bowlers, among them Ellie van Coller, Brian Dixon (junior) and Bobby Donnelly, who all became Protea bowlers.

In the admin field, John McArdle was president of World Bowls.

Alberton bowlers gathered to celebrate on the day.

Ray van Niekerk of the club said the memorabilia displayed throughout the club bears witness to the many successes over the years.

“A book is being compiled to capture the rich history surrounding the club. We thank sponsors MAG, Perfect Delivery and SA Glass for making this possible,” he said.
