Fierce fire devastates Elandspark family

An Elandspark family is in dire need of donations after a fierce blaze scorched their kitchen .

A family of five lost their precious family photos, cutlery and curtains and suffered damage to their fridge, cupboards, appliances and groceries after a fire broke out in their kitchen on June 29.

Their furniture also needs to be replaced and the damages are tens of thousand rands.

This Elandspark family appeals for any form of donations following the devastating ordeal.

Alethia Delagey said she was busy cooking and had lit both gas bottles from their kitchen when the blaze broke out.

“I went to the room, and when I came back the one bottle was leaking. The next minute I saw a big flame and was afraid to close the bottle. When I told my son he warned that we move away as he saw that something was not right. The fire got more intense and my son tried turning it down but wasn’t able to,” she said.

As she and her daughter sat in the bedroom, her son went outside to break the window, making it possible for them to escape the blaze.

“Once we were outside we heard a huge explosion. My son went back into the house to save our small dog and as soon as he came out another gas bottle exploded. My son and our daughter’s boyfriend were of great help in saving us from the blaze,” she explained.

Netsec Security Systems and the fire services also arrived at the scene to prevent the fire from spreading further. No injuries were sustained.

Shane Delagey said: “We are tenants here and the owner’s insurance seems like it will be covering for major damages. But they are not covering our groceries, cutlery and furniture. Any form of donations would be highly appreciated at this stage. We thank the community for their great help.”
