Open manhole in Voortrekker Street leaves motorist stranded
Siphesihle Khumalo was enjoying his Friday drive until he plunged into an open manhole and was left stranded.
An open manhole in Voortrekker Street has posed a threat to vehicle drivers and pedestrians.
On July 8, Siphesihle Khumalo was driving by in the street to purchase stock for his mini-market until his car slammed into the unsecured manhole.
According to Khumalo, he did not see the open manhole because there were no demarcation symbols or danger signs to point out that the area might pose some threats to road users.
“I use the road almost every week but not never noticed this manhole. I am glad that there was no car behind me,” Siphesihle said.
Four men who were in the area helped the Khumalo to free the vehicle. He had to reverse while the men lifted the vehicle out of the manhole.
According to a source who asked not to be named, this is not the first time something like this has happened.
“The worst incident was a man from Pikitup who fell into this manhole while he was on duty. Fortunately, he did not get injured from that incident,” the source said.
The councillor of ward 106 in Alberton, Tim Denny, accounted for this matter.
“I believe that the cover was was stolen again after being replaced before. I will follow up on this matter again and will request a manhole cover,” he said.
