Ward 106 substations to be gaurded

A majority of substations in Ward 106 will now be guarded by local security sectors and will have independent alarm systems installed connected to a reaction unit.

The commitment follows a stakeholders’ recently held meeting which saw businesses and interested parties commit to adopting substations in the ward.

Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny said: “This is after the executive mayor’s visit in Alberton and her instructions that the community must try and collaborate with energy and security agencies to secure substations. I jumped on board and reached out to our ward, focusing firstly on businesses and we got a resounding ‘yes’.”

Denny then got hold of SOG Security, Fox Security as well as CPS Security who have since come on board.

He has had an opportunity to be in talks with the different stakeholders who have ensured that the majority of substations in the ward are adopted.

“We recently had a meeting to draw up a memorandum of understanding detailing the process. With unemployment being so rife and with the huge drug problem in Alberton, individuals need quick money and we believe some syndicates target substations. Substations are seen as soft targets, but they will no longer be soft targets, at least not in Ward 106,” said Denny.

With the help of security companies, he promised that they will ensure case numbers and arrests are made at police stations on vandalism and theft in substations.

“Other areas have mentioned they too would like this rolled out. I’m sure other councillors will jump on board. The success story is the quick turnaround times of the community, security and businesses coming on board and this is in agreement with the energy department. I’m grateful to everyone who has made this possible,” he explained.
