Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse pays tribute to Don Mattera

Don Mattera passed on two days after he got a special recognition from Joburg Theatre.

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse said she is saddened by the news that renowned poet, author, social activist and Johannesburg resident Don Mattera has died at the age of 87.

As an extraordinary man, who devoted his life to public service and helping others, he continued to fight for equality to the end of his life.

“Mattera contributed immensely to the rich literature in South Africa and Africa. He died a few days after receiving a special recognition award during the unveiling of the diamond walk during the 60-year celebration of the Joburg Theatre,” said the mayor.

“The Don Mattera Legacy Foundation, which he established in 2020, will benefit generations to come, through various programmes for the youth.
