Know JRA’s M1 and M2 motorway jurisdictions

Once you know the jurisdiction it will be easy to do the loggings of any faults to the right entity.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), which is responsible for the repairs and maintenance of roads and related infrastructure within the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) municipal boundary, informs road users of the M1 and M2 motorway demarcations.

Following numerous service-related complaints on social media platforms about the maintenance of the motorways, the JRA has noted road users’ confusion and frustration when reporting issues on the various sections of both the M1 and M2.

According to the CoJ’s geographic information system, the JRA’s jurisdiction on the M1 (South) begins at Shakespeare Avenue (which connects to the Xavier, Ormonde and Ridgeway suburbs) and ends at the M1 (North), where Corlett Drive begins (which connects to Melrose and surrounding suburbs).

On the M2 motorway, the JRA’s jurisdiction is between Lower Germiston Road and Main Reef Road (East).

Sections of the motorways that are outside the CoJ’s municipal boundary are shared between the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport.

Members of the public are encouraged to use the applicable logging platforms to report road defects within the JRA’s jurisdiction. The JRA thanks road users in advance for their cooperation.
