Looking back on 150 years

The Melville Koppies is not just a well-maintained green lung in the middle of the city. It also holds historical treasures dating back thousands and thousands of years.

You can only discover them if you visit on Sundays between 08:00 and 11:30.

One of the information boards describing the past 150 years has just been renewed. Describing the turmoil in the land north of the Vaal River at that time, it also describes how the Geldenhuys family bought the Melville Koppies, hoping to find gold on it.

Challenge yourself on the 5km trail (twice, if you’re up to it), or meander at your own pace along the many paths. Suitable for all ages.

A couple from Fourways enjoyed hiking in the well-maintained nature reserve.

Safe parking is opposite the Melville Koppies entrance at Marks Park Sports Club on Judith Road, Emmarentia. Security on the Koppies is provided.

The cost is R90 a person, R50 for U18s and season tickets at R500 a year per adult are also available. These are not transferable.

All income is used for the maintenance of the Koppies
