Ekurhuleni meets businesses

Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga said that the City of Ekurhuleni is looking into going off the grid.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is weighing options in an effort to get off the Eskom grid.

This was said by the Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga during the IDP and Budget Consultative Forum breakfast held last Friday at the Alberton Community Hall. The city met the 100 top companies operating in the region.

“The CoE has always been known to be the workshop of the country and it has sustained that over the years. It was important that as part of the Integrated Development Process (IDP) and ultimately the approval of the budget, we engage the major stakeholders. We have spoken to the residents, now we are speaking to businesses,” he said.

“The city is looking at ways of generating the additional 1000 megawatts needed to ensure that we deal effectively with load-shedding. We are currently using between 1 200 to 2 400 megawatts.

“We need an additional 1000 megawatts to end load-shedding. That can be achieved through independent power producers, a system we are aggressively pursuing.”

Dunga said that the city will increase the frequency of communication with all stakeholders so that all views are considered in putting together the city’s plans and budgeting.
