De Freitas Foundation hosts Heartwarming Lady’s Christmas in July Breakfast
The He de Freitas Foundation's Lady's Christmas in July breakfast was a heartening reminder of the power of unity, compassion and a shared commitment to making a positive difference in the communities.
The spirit of giving and togetherness came alive at the annual Lady’s Christmas in July breakfast hosted by the De Freitas Foundation (DFF).
On a crisp Saturday morning (July 29), the Castelo Portuguese Restaurant in Glenanda, Johannesburg South, was abuzz with warmth, laughter and goodwill as 100 ladies gathered for this heart-warming event.
Stepping away from traditional holiday norms, the DFF’s Lady’s Christmas in July breakfast brought a touch of Christmas cheer to the winter months. Attendees came together to share the joy of giving by each bringing a Christmas gift.
The collection of over one hundred gifts included essentials such as toiletries, towelettes and shampoos. These simple yet vital items would go on to benefit those in need, who often lack access to such daily essentials.
Through years of dedicated work, the DFF recognised that, beyond food and clothing, basic toiletries remained a significant necessity among the most vulnerable. It was this realisation that birthed the idea of the Christmas in July breakfast, a brainchild of DFF board member Jeanette de Freitas.
While the event serves a noble cause, it’s not all about charity. It’s also about camaraderie and celebration. The morning unfolded with an air of festivity, accompanied by lively music and anticipation for raffle prizes. Attendees were in for a treat, including a chance to win an air fryer valued at over R1 300.
Among the esteemed guest speakers was Natasha Rodrigues, an expert in the correlation between nutrition, energy levels and health. Her insights were met with enthusiasm by the attendees. Dr Graça Fonseca, the Consul General of Portugal in Johannesburg, also graced the occasion, offering her support for the DFF’s impactful endeavours.
A poignant moment of silence was observed in memory of the late Mariazinha Gonçalves, a prominent figure in the Portuguese community and a cherished cousin of the De Freitas family.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Jeanette de Freitas expressed gratitude for the attendees’ participation, highlighting the dual purpose of the gathering.
“People have missed socialising since Covid, and not only was this event enjoyable, but it also contributes to the meaningful work our foundation undertakes,” she said.
Manny de Freitas, another DFF board member, stood as one of only two men in attendance, emphasising the event’s focus on female empowerment and community. Serving as the MC, Manny orchestrated the proceedings with finesse.
Behind-the-scenes efforts were also acknowledged, with Rosária de Freitas, DFF board member and Lourdes dos Santos, a close friend of the DFF, being recognised for their dedication. Isa Rodrigues, the restaurant’s owner, went above and beyond expectations to ensure the event’s success.
The Lady’s Christmas in July breakfast set the stage for the DFF’s upcoming endeavours. Mark your calendars for November 5 when the DFF annual lunch promises to be yet another meaningful and impactful event.
