The WPC powerlifting championships were held in Chicago, USA, where Alberton’s Mark Esch won the world championship.

Albertonian, Mark Esch (56), recently won the WPC Powerlifting World Championships in his class which was held in the USA.
Mark was awarded the coveted WPC medal for his stellar performance. He lifted in the men’s masters division (55-59).

Commenting on his win, Mark said: “I am incredibly humbled and overjoyed to have achieved this milestone of winning the gold medal at the Powerlifting World Championships.

“This victory is not mine alone; it belongs to the people who have stood by me through every lift, every struggle, and every triumph. This win is a testament to the power of teamwork, love, and perseverance,” he said.

“I couldn’t have done it without my wife, Charmaine, who showed unwavering support and belief in me, my daughter Courtney who I knew was watching and that fuelled my determination to be the best version of myself, and my coach Colin du Bruyn for pushing me beyond my limit and believing in my potential,” added Mark.

In 2023, Mark successfully defended his title in Manchester, UK, before obtaining his latest medal in Chicago. This year the world championships will be held in Durban, KZN, and Mark is eyeing yet another medal.
