Local para-athlete inspires aspiring cyclists to join the 36th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight Cycle Race 2025
With exciting race options, incredible prizes, and a mission to support Retina South Africa, this inclusive event promises to be more than a race; it is a movement to inspire change and empower para-athletes.

Renowned para-athlete Gavin Kilpatrick, a trailblazer in para-sports, calls aspiring cyclists to participate in the 36th annual Dis-Chem Ride for Sight on February 16 at the Boksburg City Stadium.
A legacy of excellence
Kilpatrick, visually impaired because of Stargardt Macular Dystrophy (SMD), has achieved remarkable success on the international stage.
He won a bronze medal at the Beijing Paralympics for track cycling and has competed in numerous international events, representing South Africa with pride.
Currently serving as a para-sport developer for Retina South Africa, Kilpatrick is passionate about advancing opportunities for para-athletes and fostering inclusivity in sports.
The premier cycling event
The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight offers two race options – the 116km Super Classic, presented by Ensure, and the 62km DS24 Challenge. These races cater to a broad spectrum of cyclists, including dedicated para-sport categories, making it an inclusive event.
Exciting prizes and sponsorships
This year’s event features generous support from Dis-Chem as the primary sponsor, alongside contributions from @the silver flairsa and @rebelsafetygear.
Participants can look forward to incredible prizes, including:
• An Orbea bicycle, sponsored by Cycle Lab
• Luxury stay at Pezulu Tree House Lodge
• Venter bike trailer
• Sealy bed set
Additionally, a donation draw offers the chance to win an Orbea gravel bike valued at R45 000, with the Dis-Chem Foundation matching all donations of R50 or more.
Focus on tandem cycling and para-athletes
Kilpatrick emphasises the importance of tandem cycling for visually impaired individuals. Last year’s event featured 54 disabled participants and their guides, and the organisation’s goal for this year is to welcome 100 para-cyclists to the dedicated para-start group.
“For anyone interested in piloting a tandem bicycle or becoming a new para-cyclist, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while participating in an incredible sport,” Kilpatrick said.
Additionally, Heinrich Vermaak and Francois Le Grange will represent Alberton.
More than just a race
The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight is more than an athletic event; it is a movement.
Retina South Africa’s initiatives include education, community engagement, research, and support for individuals with visual impairments. Every entry, donation, and participant contributes to driving these vital programs forward.
