Residents unite for successful Freedom Day clean-up

Residents rolled up their sleeves on Freedom Day to clean up illegal dumping sites and restore pride in the community.

Residents of Roodekop Ext 31 came together on Freedom Day for a community clean-up campaign to tackle illegal dumping hotspots in the area.

The initiative, organised by the Roodekop Ext 31 Steering and Streets Committees, started at 10:00 at the Mobile Clinic space, where residents gathered before spreading out to affected areas.

The campaign followed ongoing concerns from community members about the rise in illegal dumping, which had left parts of the neighbourhood littered with waste.

These dumping sites posed serious health risks, attracting pests such as rats, flies, and cockroaches that could easily spread into nearby homes.

Organisers said the clean-up was not only about improving the area’s appearance but also about protecting residents’ health and dignity.

The campaign also highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment to support property values and attract investment into the area.

Residents arrived prepared, bringing refuse bags and tools such as rakes, shovels, brooms and gloves. Families, including children, took part in the initiative, reinforcing the message of environmental responsibility and community pride.

“This is about taking ownership of our space and setting the right example for the next generation,” the committee said.

Following the clean-up, residents were reminded to adhere to municipal waste-disposal bylaws. Waste collection in the area takes place every Friday, and proper disposal remains key to keeping the neighbourhood clean.

Community members were also encouraged to report any future illegal dumping incidents promptly, providing details and photos where possible to ensure action.

The campaign marked a step forward in addressing illegal dumping in Roodekop Ext 31, with residents showing that collective effort can lead to meaningful change.
