Alberton SAPS warns motorists of an increase in hijackings in Alberton and surrounding areas.

Criminals are targeting motorists on the R59, N3, N12, and N17 highways. SAPS says they are using three main tactics to hijack drivers.

Be wary of:

• A vehicle overtakes you and signals there is something wrong with your car. When you pull over to check, you are hijacked.

• An unknown vehicle overtakes you, suddenly swerves into your lane, and brings traffic to a stop-giving hijackers the chance to strike.

• You offer a lift to a stranger in exchange for quick cash. The passenger secretly contacts accomplices via WhatsApp. Upon reaching a location-often under a bridge, the suspect asks to be dropped off. As you stop, a group emerges from nearby bushes and hijacks you.

“We are seeing a rapid increase in hijackings in Alberton and on surrounding highways, including the R59, N3, N12, and N17. Please urgently alert all drivers and make them aware of these reported hijacking tactics. Take this message seriously and share it with staff, colleagues, and the public. Prevention starts with awareness,” said Alberton SAPS in a statement.
