Juanita Vermeulen murder case postponed as suspect receives medical treatment in prison
The bail application of Frederick “Freddie” Vermeulen, charged with the premeditated murder of his wife Juanita Vermeulen, has been delayed until January 26 after he was reportedly receiving medical care at Boksburg Prison.
Frederick “Freddie” Vermeulen, charged with the premeditated murder of his wife, Juanita Vermeulen, failed to appear in court for his bail application, sparking outrage from family and the community.
The hearing has now been postponed until January 26, with Vermeulen reportedly receiving medical treatment at a ward in Boksburg Prison.
Outside Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, Juanita’s parents, Alwyn and Amalia du Plessis, her sister Roelien Muller, and a large group of supporters called for justice.
Amalia described her daughter as a very delicate person who always puts the needs of others first.

She said Juanita had been in the process of separating from Vermeulen, but still lived in the same house.
“No parent should have to see this. Justice must be done,” said Amalia, recalling the harrowing moment she had to identify her daughter’s body.
Roelien added, “We are broken. Now she is a statistic of gender-based violence. You can’t take another person’s life. I think the death penalty should be brought back.”
Community members have also strongly opposed bail, warning that leniency in such cases only fuels public anger.
