WATCH: SAPS Ekurhuleni District Commissioner leads anti-crime Operation Shanela in Alberton

SAPS Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole was accompanied by the station commanders of Alberton, Germiston, Katlehong, and Vosloorus SAPS. The operation was set up on Heidelberg and Epsom roads, in Alberton.

SAPS Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major-General Anna Sithole, led the anti-crime Operation Shanela in Alberton on the morning of February 12.

Accompanied by the station commanders of Alberton, Germiston, Katlehong, and Vosloorus SAPS, Sithole said it yielded positive results.

Commenting on why they chose Alberton, Sithole said: “We noticed that there’s a challenge in terms of car hijackings, burglary, residential, as well as business robberies and sexual offences.”

The operation was supported by police officers from Alberton, Germiston, Katlehong, Vosloorus, and EMPD.

Private security companies such as Alberton’s CPS, FOX, SOU, and members of the Community in Blue supported the inisitiative The operation was specifically focused on Alberton and Nigel.

“These are simultaneous operations. One is in Nigel, and one is here in Alberton,” added Sithole.

Statistics of Operation Shanela in Alberton and Nigel:

• 258 suspects arrested, 158 of those were arrested for contact and other crimes

• 41 undocumented immigrants

• 39 suspects were arrested for gender-based violence

• Six suspects for dealing in drugs

• 111 traffic violation fines issued valued at R40 950

• 10 motor vehicles were impounded after it emerged that engines had been tampered with, and two were confiscated.

Sithole told the Alberton Record that some of the suspects arrested were nabbed for serious crimes and theft.

“Sometimes stolen property is sold to second-hand goods shops, so we have dealt with two second-hand goods shops and issued them with fines because of non-compliance with the second-hand goods Act,” Sithole said.
