WATCH: Alberton murder-accused couple in court, lawyer for the accused calls in sick

The State prosecutor in the case wants to cross examine Werner Jack Schoeman (accused one) after his defence lawyer put him on the stand at March 4’s trial proceedings.

The case against the Alberton murder-accused couple, Werner Jack Schoeman (accused one) and Delichia Bekker (accused two), returned to the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on March 10.

The pair is accused of involvement in the murder of Susan Gillian Murray, who lived in Verwoerdpark at the time of her death and was found dumped in Alberton North in November 2023.

Schoeman and Bekker face charges including murder, fraud, and theft. Bekker, Murray’s daughter, is accused of involvement in her mother’s death and was arrested days before Schoeman, who was caught hiding in South Hills.

At the March 10 trial hearing, the court was informed of the lawyer representing Schoeman and Bekker’s incapacity. “I have just been informed that accused one and accused two’s legal representative called in sick; therefore, this case cannot proceed without their lawyer being present,” said presiding magistrate Isabella Mlaba.

The State prosecutor in the case also informed the court of her intention to cross-examine Schoeman (accused one) after his defence lawyer put him on the stand at March 4’s trial proceedings, where he testified about his version of events before the discovery of Murray’s dead body in Alberton North in November 2023.

The case was postponed to Friday, March 13, when the prosecutor is expected to cross-examine Schoeman. Both accused were remanded back into custody.
