The Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, recently released the third quarter crime statistics for South Africa.
The Alberton Record took a look at the numbers for local residents in the suburb’s immediate policing precincts.
Top 10 crime trends that affected residents of Alberton by police station:
Alberton SAPS:
1. Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 373 cases opened.
2. Drug-related crime – 364 cases opened.
3. Commercial crime – 340 cases opened.
4. Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle – 254 cases opened.
5. Common assault – 236 cases opened.
6. Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm – 222 cases opened.
7. Shoplifting – 217 cases opened.
8. *TRIO crimes – 212 cases opened.
9. Malicious damage to property – 159 cases opened.
10. Burglary at residential premises – 142 cases opened.
* TRIO crimes are a specific category of, often violent, aggravated robberies such as carjacking, house and business robbery.

Brackendowns SAPS:
1. Commercial crime – 446 cases opened.
2. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – 195 cases opened.
3. Burglary at residential premises – 168 cases opened.
4. Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 154 cases opened.
5. Common assault – 150 cases opened.
6. Malicious damage to property – 112 cases opened.
7. Theft out of or from motor vehicle – 92 cases opened.
8. Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle – 82 cases opened.
9. TRIO crimes – 79 cases opened.
10. Drug-related crime – 72 cases opened.

Eden Park SAPS:
1. Drug-related crime – 463 cases opened.
2. Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm – 456 cases opened.
3. Common assault – 425 cases opened.
4. Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 274 cases opened.
5. Malicious damage to property – 236 cases opened.
6. TRIO crimes – 174 cases opened.
7. Commercial crime – 141 cases opened.
8. Burglary at residential premises – 133 cases opened.
9. Street Robbery – 96 cases opened.
10. Carjacking – 87 cases opened.

“Our people are entitled to know how many crimes are reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) on a regular basis, different categories are showing an increase, or decrease in the precincts where communities live. We share this information so that communities, businesses, and public service departments will have a sense of what is happening in their neighbourhoods in terms of crime,” said Cachalia during the media briefing.
