Suspects arrested for robbery in Thokoza

Four suspects, including three police officers, were arrested after a community member reported an armed robbery in progress in Thokoza.

Four suspects, including three police officers, were arrested following an armed robbery at Letsoho Shopping Centre in Thokoza on April 9.

A community member noticed suspicious activity at a shop and realised a robbery was in progress. The individual quickly alerted the Thathazonke Anti-Crime Unit, who responded immediately.

When members arrived at the scene, they identified two vehicles linked to the suspects and approached carefully. Four suspects were arrested.

During questioning, the suspects claimed to be police officers and showed police identification cards. Further checks confirmed that three of the suspects are active police constables, while the fourth is a civilian.

It is alleged that the suspects entered a container shop, posing as police officials. They reportedly demanded illicit cigarettes, handcuffed the owner and his employees, and loaded boxes of cigarettes into their vehicles.

The business owner alerted the Thathazonke community group, which helped stop the suspects and carried out a citizen’s arrest.

Police recovered stolen cigarettes, several firearms, police vehicles, and official documents. CCTV footage from the shop has also been secured as evidence.

The suspects are facing charges including armed robbery, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and impersonating a police officer.

They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on April 17.

Authorities have thanked all units and community members who helped in the operation.

Investigations are ongoing and more charges may be added.
