Vehicle intercepted in Alberton linked to rape and kidnapping case

Swift coordination and camera technology help authorities track and stop a suspect linked to serious crimes.

A white Toyota Quantum linked to a rape and kidnapping case has been successfully intercepted in the Alberton area following multiple alerts from license plate recognition (LPR) systems.

The vehicle was listed as wanted under a Kliprivier SAPS case number in connection with a rape and kidnapping case. In April, it had repeatedly triggered LPR cameras while moving in and out of Alberton, but could not be located or intercepted at the time.

The vehicle again triggered both Vumacam and AfriForum Alberton LPR cameras while travelling through the area.

A lookout was immediately issued, and Brackendowns SAPS members were informed that the vehicle was active in the Alrode and Thokoza area. Shortly after the latest alert, members of Brackendowns SAPS spotted the vehicle and initiated a takedown.

The vehicle was safely stopped and, together with the driver, transported to Brackendowns SAPS for initial processing.

The driver was subsequently detained and transferred to Kliprivier SAPS for further investigation in connection with the case. During initial processing, the suspect provided false personal details to SAPS members.

Upon arrival at Kliprivier SAPS, the driver was positively identified as the suspected perpetrator. He was wanted in connection with multiple cases of kidnapping and rape involving underage girls.

The suspect remains in custody.
