Stolen VW Polo recovered in Alberton crime prevention operation
Quick action by private security and metro police leads to arrests, as local crime stats highlight ongoing vehicle theft concerns.
A crime prevention operation in Alberton resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of the suspects.
According to CPS Security, members were conducting routine patrols in Ekurhuleni when they identified a suspicious silver VW Polo parked along a roadside. When the occupants returned to the vehicle and drove off, the team followed and, with assistance from EMPD’s Community Liaison Unit (CLU), stopped the vehicle.
Upon inspection, officers discovered the car was fitted with false number plates. Further investigation using the vehicle identification number (VIN) confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen in a case opened in Norkem Park earlier this year, in February.
The suspects were immediately arrested and transported to Alberton SAPS, where they are facing charges related to possession of a stolen vehicle.
“Another stolen vehicle recovered. Another step taken against crime,” CPS said in a statement. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of vehicle-related crime in the Alberton area.

Alberton SAPS: 254 cases.
Brackendowns SAPS: 82 cases.

These figures rank vehicle theft among the most prevalent crimes affecting residents, underscoring the importance of vigilance and preventive measures.
The Crime Hub, developed by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), is an online platform that provides reliable, up-to-date information on crime and violence in South Africa.
It features interactive maps, fact sheets and analytical tools designed to help the public, media and policymakers better understand crime trends.

Launched in 2010 with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the platform aims to make crime data more accessible and to contribute towards building safer communities.
