Freddie Vermeulen’s murder case delayed again as new bail bid heads to court
The murder case against Freddie Vermeulen has been postponed once again after his new legal team submitted a new bail application. As Juanita Vermeulen's family continues to seek justice, the court is expected to rule on the application on June 19.
The murder case against Frederick ‘Freddie’ Vermeulen has been postponed once again after his newly appointed legal representative filed a new bail application shortly after taking over the matter.
The case was heard at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where the defence submitted a new bail application on June 4.
The court is expected to hear the outcome of the application on June 19.
The matter will now proceed in District Court 4 at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, rather than District Court 2, where previous proceedings were held.
This latest development comes months after Freddie’s initial bail application was denied in February.
During those proceedings, the court ruled that his personal circumstances were not exceptional enough to warrant his release.
The magistrate also highlighted several inconsistencies in his version of events, including discrepancies between his testimony and post-mortem findings.
Freddie’s previous legal representative withdrew from the matter due to concerns about inconsistencies in the accused’s statements.
Freddie remains behind bars while awaiting the outcome of the new bail application.
He stands accused of the murder of his wife, Juanita, whose body was discovered in the boot of her vehicle at a shopping centre in Brackenhurst on January 9. She had sustained multiple stab wounds.
During earlier court proceedings, Freddie maintained that the fatal incident was not premeditated and claimed that he acted in self-defence during a confrontation at their home.
He testified that a struggle ensued after Juanita allegedly attacked him with a knife.
The State, however, has argued that evidence gathered during the investigation raises serious concerns about his version of events.
Prosecutors previously pointed to discrepancies between his account and forensic findings, including the number of stab wounds recorded during the post-mortem examination.
Speaking to the Alberton Record following the latest postponement, Juanita’s father, Alwyn du Plessis, said that the continued delays have been difficult for the family as they continue to grieve the loss of their daughter.
“All we want is justice for Juanita,” he said.
The family recently marked what would have been Juanita’s birthday on May 24, a day Alwyn described as particularly emotional.
“It was a powerful reminder that my daughter is no longer with us,” he said.
He added that the family remains hopeful that the legal process will ultimately deliver accountability and closure.
Juanita was laid to rest on January 26, and her death has continued to draw significant public attention across Alberton and surrounding communities.
The case has been postponed to June 19, when the court is expected to hear arguments relating to the new bail application while investigations into the murder continue.
