The case against Alberton murder-accused Frederick ‘Freddie’ Vermeulen returned to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on July 24.

Vermeulen appeared in District Criminal Court Four (DC4), where his lawyer had previously argued for his release on bail.

According to evidence before court, Juanita sustained nine stab wounds, four of which were on her chest, others on her thighs and upper limbs.

Her body was found in the boot of her vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping centre in Brackenhurst.

Vermeulen faces a charge of murder. He wants out of prison due to what he calls deteriorating health since being incarcerated.

At the July 24 proceedings, the presiding magistrate handed down judgment in Vermeulen’s bail application. “The court is of the opinion that the postmortem confirms that the State has a prima facie case against the applicant (Vermeulen).

“Considering the post-mortem and its findings, the court is of the opinion that the findings in the post-mortem do not warrant a change in decision for bail and the application is dismissed,” said the presiding magistrate.

In deciding Vermeulen’s bail application, the magistrate considered arguments from his lawyer, the State prosecutor, and the prison nurse from Boksburg Prison (where Vermeulen is held).

The magistrate denied Vermeulen bail, highlighting the seriousness of the charge against him and adding that she found no new facts to release him on bail.

Vermeulen’s case has been sent back to District Criminal Court Two (DC2), where a decision will be made on whether he will be tried in a Regional or High Court.

Vermeulen remains in custody until August 7.
