Suspicious R1 rifle found on South Hills property handed over to police
A concerned resident's discovery of an R1 rifle on a South Hills property prompted a swift response from security, SAPS and metro cops, with the firearm now forming part of an official investigation.
A suspicious firearm discovered on a property in South Hills has been handed over to authorities after a resident alerted CPS Security.
According to CPS Security, officers responded after a concerned resident discovered an R1 rifle on their property.
On arrival, the security team inspected the firearm and found that it appeared to have been abandoned.
“Upon inspection, it appeared that the firearm had been dumped. The serial numbers had been filed off, making the firearm difficult to identify,” CPS Security said in a statement.
SAPS assistance was immediately requested, and members of the JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) also responded to the scene.
The firearm was safely handed over to the authorities for further investigation and the necessary legal processes.
CPS Security urged members of the public not to handle suspicious firearms or other potentially dangerous items if they are discovered.
“We encourage members of the public never to handle suspicious firearms or other dangerous items. Contact the relevant authorities or your security provider immediately so they can be dealt with safely,” the security company said.
The company also highlighted the importance of community vigilance in helping to combat crime.
“A vigilant community plays a vital role in keeping our neighbourhoods safe. If you have information relating to firearms or criminal activity, please report it. Your identity will be kept confidential,” CPS Security added.
