Vehicle reported stolen in Alberton recovered in anti-smuggling operation near Polokwane
A Nissan Navara reported stolen in the Alberton policing area has been recovered during a Limpopo anti-smuggling operation, with one suspect arrested as police continue efforts to disrupt cross-border vehicle theft syndicates.
A Nissan Navara reported stolen in Alberton has been recovered by police in Limpopo before it could allegedly be smuggled out of South Africa, highlighting the impact vehicle theft can have on local communities.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo said it had intensified its efforts to combat cross-border vehicle smuggling, leading to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of two stolen vehicles worth an estimated R1.5 million during separate operations conducted on August 2 and 3.
For Alberton residents, the second recovery is particularly significant. Police said operational members acted on intelligence regarding another stolen vehicle allegedly destined for the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
While maintaining observation on the N1 South outside Polokwane on Monday, August 3, members intercepted a grey Nissan Navara. Investigations established that the vehicle had been reported stolen in the Alberton policing area on Friday, July 31.
The recovered vehicle is valued at approximately R600 000. A 34-year-old South African man was arrested in connection with the incident.
The operation formed part of a joint effort involving the Provincial Tracking Team, the Provincial Investigation Unit and external law enforcement partners, including Limpopo Tactical, Tshimollo Security and Investigations, Shadow Secure, Tracker South Africa and Tracker Connect.
In a separate incident on Sunday, August 2, police recovered a Nissan Navara ProMax reportedly stolen in Springs a day earlier. Police said intelligence indicated the vehicle was being transported to the Beitbridge Port of Entry for smuggling out of the country.
After a high-speed pursuit, two Malawian nationals, aged 36 and 40, were arrested. The recovered vehicle is valued at approximately R900 000.
Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, commended the teams involved for their work in disrupting cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates.
He said, “The arrests and recoveries demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations,” and reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling. The three suspects are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court. Police investigations are continuing.
