Two men were arrested after EMPD officers allegedly found 20kg of electrical cable and several tools in their possession near the Angus train station in Alberton.

According to the EMPD, Alberton precinct officers were patrolling Old Vereeniging Road at about 09:00 on August 12, when they spotted two men walking near the veld next to the train station.

The officers approached the pair, aged 23 and 26, and searched.

EMPD said officers found 20kg of electrical cable designed for use on lampposts, traffic lights, substations and other power supply infrastructure.

The cable was valued at approximately R1 000.

Officers also allegedly recovered two chisels, a hammer, an industrial-use knife, a shifting spanner and a bolt cutter.

The two men, identified by EMPD as undocumented Zimbabwean nationals, were arrested and taken to Brackendowns police station.

They are facing charges relating to the Immigration Act and possession of suspected stolen goods.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The arrests come amid ongoing concerns around the theft of electrical infrastructure, which can disrupt essential services and leave communities vulnerable to outages.
