Ward 38 residents to select new ward committee representatives

Brackenhurst and Brackendowns are invited to participate in a meeting to elect new ward representatives on June 13.

Brackenhurst and Brackendowns residents are invited to take part in electing their ward committee representatives in a public meeting on June 13.

All organised formations, interested groups, and sectors are invited to register and nominate a candidate for open positions on the committees for Ward 38’s numerous sectors.

The nomination period has started and ends on June 1.

The following are the portfolios that need to be filled: women and children, health and social development, economic development and city planning, aged and disability, and SHRAC (sports, heritage, recreation, arts and culture).

Nomination forms are available at Alberton Customer Care Centre, public participation office, third floor.
Ward representatives will be elected through the legal framework as per The Constitution of The Republic of South Africa, Section 152(e), which stipulates that one of the objects of Local Government is ‘to encourage the involvement of communities and community organisations in the matters of Local Government’.

Furthermore, section 72 (1) of the Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998 read with section 73 (1), as amended, states that the Municipality must establish a ward committee for each ward in the municipality.

Only elected representatives chosen in accordance with the aforementioned legal framework may represent the community while acknowledging other stakeholders. In addition to providing a legislative basis for local administration, ward committees are an essential organisational component that promotes civic engagement in municipalities.

To be nominated as a ward committee member and elected as a sector representative, a person must be a citizen of South Africa, a registered voter in that ward, at least 18 years old, free of any convictions, not in arrears with payments for services rendered to the council, and willing to make the necessary arrangements to settle the account in accordance with established council policies.

The elections for Ward 38 will be held in the conference room of the Alberton Civic Centre at 18:00.
