Haksul again wins artist of the year at SAMAs

A young man who grew up in a township lacking resources and who strongly believes in music has made the Alberton community proud by winning the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) artist of the year in the South Africa Music Awards again.

Haksul Muziq recently received the South African Music Awards (SAMA) Artist of the Year award for a second time.
The local artist has proved that greater Alberton is a place of fast-growing talent.

Tokoloho Mavuso, widely known as Haksul Muziq, was raised in Palmridge, where his love and passion for music blossomed.

He was among several well-known performers, including A-Reece, Musa Keys, Makhadzi, Emtee, and Young Stunna, nominated in the SAMPRA Artist of the Year category.

That award was first given out in 2021. It goes to musicians who, in the eyes of the public, provided the most entertainment for their followers over the preceding year.

“Being the title holder for the second time affirms that good things happen to those who wait and put all the effort needed to make something work. After the negative feedback I got from unknown people last year, I did not doubt myself, but it encouraged me to work even harder,” said the artist.

Haksul has worked with many celebrities, including Jub Jub, DJ Sbu, Big Zulu, Makhadzi, De Mthuda, Semi Tee, Kamo Mphela and Mfr Souls.

The Alberton Record asked him who he enjoyed working with the most, and he said Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye.

He said the reason is because of how humble Jub Jub is, and his enthusiasm uplifts the youth and the community.

“I have learnt a lot from the veteran and still have more to learn because I work with him daily. I learnt more about intrapersonal and interpersonal skills and developed these two aspects. He has taught me how to manage a situation without leaving any loopholes, and for that, I will be forever grateful,” he said.

To help uplift the community, Haksul has been part of an outreach programme that aids girls to regain their confidence. He donates sanitary pads to various schools and organisations.

“It’s the little things that matter. I wish I could do more for our society, but this is the least I can do to give back. Education is key to unlocking many locked doors, so it is important to help our learners with such needs as they can go a long way,” said Haksul Muziq.

The artist aims to release more music next year and collaborate with artists in the industry while not forgetting to give aspiring artists a chance to showcase their work.
