Remembering Brian O’Friel

His legacy, marked by dedication, hard work, and community spirit, will be remembered for generations to come.

The Alberton community mourns the loss of Brian O’Friel, a distinguished businessman and one of the founders of Alberton Hardware, who died on January 18.

He left behind a legacy that has significantly impacted the community for almost five decades.

The Alberton Record visited his son, Patrick, to talk about his life.

A family business

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 10, 1944, Brian moved to South Africa at the age of five with his family.
A visionary entrepreneur, Brian and his wife Jenny established Alberton Hardware on October 22, 1975, originally situated on Gerrit Maritz Street.

Under Brian’s guidance, the business flourished, leading to the purchase of an open stand across the road and the construction of a new building in 1980, the current location at 33 Van Riebeeck Street Alberton North.

Over the years, Alberton Hardware became more than just a business, it became a family affair.

Many family members, spanning generations, contributed to the success of the store, leaving an indelible mark on its history.

“His passion for the business was evident in his commitment to providing a one-stop-shop for DIY enthusiasts, industrial needs, and contractors,” said his son Patrick.

His motto, ”If we haven’t got it, we’ll get it!” reflected his dedication to customer satisfaction.

“My father also believed in giving back to the community, considering the 50 employees not just as individuals but as 50 families to support.”

His vision was to build the Alberton Hardware brand collaboratively, ensuring its strength for generations to come.

“Although he retired from daily operations in March 2003, his involvement continued as an active shareholder and advisor in the business.”

Jenny, along with sons Garth and Patrick, continued the family legacy until her sudden passing in July 2014.

Beyond hardware

Brian’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop with Alberton Hardware. In October 2004, he opened another successful business named Bergin, a wholesale venture supplying the entire hardware industry.

Brian O’Fiel was a keen golfer.

His strong work ethic and commitment to customer service ensured the success of yet another Alberton business.
He finally retired in February 2023, leaving behind a thriving enterprise.

A loving family man

In his spare time, Brian was involved with the Alberton Judo Club with his friend Joe Small as an instructor from 1968 and retired from judo in 1989 after achieving his double black belt.

He was an avid sailor and spent many weekends on the Vaal Dam with his family. He also played golf.

He was an honorary member of Reading Country Club where he enjoyed playing the game with his children and friends. Motorcycling became his hobby later in life and he joined the Ulysses club in 2001.

He loved nothing more than getting on his Harley Davidson Trike and riding with friends. He received his platinum colours from the National Biking Association, which is a major achievement.

Brian is deeply missed by his wife Colleen, children Robert, Yvonne, Cheryl, Garth, Patrick, and Janine, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family remembers him not only as a successful businessman but also as a loving and devoted family man.

His legacy, marked by dedication, hard work, and community spirit, will be remembered for generations to come.

Patrick added, “To the community, colleagues and friends that sent messages of hope and condolences to all of us, the family truly appreciate it.”
