Slomo Magic to release EP
Four years after releasing no music, Slomo Magic returns with a hit EP.
Bongani Mbatha (28), popularly known as ‘Slomo Magic’, will release his third EP on March 22.
The release comes after he stopped making music in 2020 to pursue his studies at Unisa.
This developing artist is originally from Nongoma in the ‘garden province’, KwaZulu-Natal. Both his parents raised him, but his father passed away when he was 20.
In 2016, he released his first album, Mzabalazo (Struggle), comprising 12 songs. Mzabalazo was not just a name to him because his struggles before getting a breakthrough in the music industry inspired him.
This album created a large fan base, and his fans have supported him ever since.
The artist said that with consistency and perseverance, he released his second album, Gender-Based Violence, in 2019. This album was about the violence and abuse women endure and how he encouraged women to be strong and fight for themselves through the songs he wrote.
“Releasing two albums was my dream come true because I had always seen myself as a big and famous artist. However, I saw the need to return to school and finish my studies at 24. There’s nothing as important as education. First, pursue your studies, then go for what you are passionate about,” he said.
Slomo Magic passed matric in 2013, and a year later, moved to Johannesburg, particularly the greater Alberton area of Thokoza, to pursue his passion. He believed Johannesburg was the best place to find greener pastures.
According to this star, things did not go as planned when he first arrived at the city of gold and ended up getting a job as a security guard to provide for himself and his family.
In all this, Slomo Magic’s passion for Maskandi music never died, and he kept hoping that things would work out for him one day, not knowing his time to shine was near.
“In life, I learnt not to give up until I get what I want,” said the artist.
He is furthering his studies at Unisa and will graduate in July. Bongani passed his matric at Mpilweni Senior Secondary School in KZN.
He said his father wanted him to go to tertiary immediately after he completed his matric.
On the other hand, his mother had always supported him and encouraged him to follow his passion.
Bongani’s writing style is influenced by what is happening around the country, like things happening in parliament, GBV, social issues, and his past experiences.
The new EP is available on all digital platforms.
