The Reform Church in Africa (RCA) Shanti congregation helped the Palm Ridge Primary School bid farewell to its Grade Seven learners who are going to high school in the 2025 academic year.
RCA donated stationery packs to learners which will come in handy as they prepare for high school.
The farewell ceremony was held on November 25, where motivational speakers addressed learners on what is expected of them as they move into the next phase of their schooling lives. Speakers included Reverend Kovilan Moodley, principal Sinthamalar Pillay, Reshlie Singh and Roshnee Pillay who are from Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

“Our church decided to organise a farewell for Grade Seven learners in collaboration with the school as a way of motivating and encouraging them to aspire to greatness and success.
“Since we are part of this community, we wanted to lend a helping hand. This farewell was also aimed at teaching learners about the importance of giving back to the community. We hope the stationery packs will help them next year,” said Reverend Kovilan Moodley.
Palm Ridge Primary School principal Mrs Pillay also commented on the farewell, saying: “We want to thank the RCA Shanti congregation for their wonderful donation of stationery packs and goodie bags to our learners. We appreciate it. Our school relies on sponsorships and donations to cover most of our needs because we are a section 20 school, so every little bit of help we get goes a long way.”

Section 20 schools are schools whose funds are managed by their respective provincial education departments, and the department allocates these funds on necessary items.
Palm Ridge Primary School does not have a hall. It needs paving next to some of its classes and offices where weeds grow rapidly, but it does not have money to cover such costs.
Plans to help the school build a hall:
Reverend Moodley and his colleagues are on a fundraising drive to try to help the school build a hall. Through a public benefit organisation, they have managed to raise R50 000, however, they need about R500 000 to build the school a hall.
Willing donors are encouraged to donate funds to help the school build a hall. Donating to a public benefit organisation allows donors to receive tax deductions from the government.
Donation details:
Funds may be transferred to the public benefit organisation managing the project funds via First National Bank, account number 6273 7402 248, branch code 252 242.
