WATCH: Gauteng Education MEC delivers an update on the 2025 online admissions process

An Alberton-based parent expressed her dissatisfaction with the online application process to MEC Chiloane during the briefing at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

The Gauteng Department of Education recently hosted a media briefing at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen to give an update on the 2025 online admissions for grades one and eight learner placements.

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane spoke at length about the online application process. The Gauteng education department has 344 890 applications for grades one and eight.

Of these applications, 165 785 were for Grade One and 179 105 for Grade Eight. Only 325 858 complete applications qualified for placement, while 19 032 incomplete applications will be placed during the late application period.

There are currently only 124 unplaced Grade Eight learners in Kempton Park.

“The Gauteng Department of Education has proactively engaged with the parents of these learners through SMS communication. They invited parents to attend a meeting scheduled for December 9, at 18:00, at Laerskool Birchleigh,” said Chiloane.

An Alberton-based parent, Porsche Malope, expressed her dissatisfaction with the online application process to Chiloane during the briefing at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

Porsche Malope, a parent from Alberton, expressed her dissatisfaction with the Gauteng education department’s online application process at the briefing held by MEC Matome Chiloane at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

“My daughter’s application was declined even though we live within walking distance of the school; instead, we got an offer from a school far from where we live. Some children from far away areas get accepted into schools in Alberton,” she said.

“Parents were supposed to respond to a transfer offer within seven days of receipt by logging into their profile on the GDE’s online admissions application system and accept or decline the offer of placement,” added Chiloane.

A total of 19 032 parents submitted applications without submitting valid proof of home address. In such instances, the department did not offer placements because of a lack of verifiable home addresses submitted by the applicants.

The online admissions application system will open for late applications from December 11 to January 30 to allow parents to select a school with available space.
