2 animal organisations rescue a dog near Meyersdal Square
For weeks, a lone sighthound survived in the shadows of Meyersdal Square, scavenging for food and dodging danger. But when a group of determined rescuers set out on a daring mission, everything changed.
In a remarkable feat of teamwork, perseverance, and compassion, the Animal Protection Network (APN) and Linmeyer Community Animal Rescue (LCARA) successfully rescued a Sighthound named Raven, whose survival instincts kept him alive in the unforgiving urban wilderness.
From his first sighting on January 23 to the dramatic rescue on February 16, Raven’s journey has been one of struggle, fear, and now, hope.
The rescue mission
Raven lived in drainage tunnels near Meyersdal Square, surviving on small rodents and food scraps.
The environment was treacherous – wet, filthy, and hazardous, including heavy traffic.
Sightings were rare until Jackie Kühn, a dedicated animal lover, spotted him on February 14 and began leaving food for him.
Her plea for help set the wheels in motion for one of the most challenging yet rewarding rescues the team has ever undertaken.
On the morning of February 16, they devised a plan.
“Michael Erwee and Tomas Malatji braved the tunnels, crawling through the confined space while the rest of the team positioned themselves strategically. They placed a net over the tunnel to prevent Raven’s escape.”
The tense rescue, which took about 10 to 15 minutes, had only one casualty – one of the team members received a nip from the terrified dog.
Di Hingley, a member of APN, described the moment they finally secured Raven: “The second we had him, we could see the fear in his eyes, but we also saw something else – relief. It is like he knew his fight for survival was finally over.”
Raven’s condition
After the rescue, the team took Raven to New South Vet in a severely emaciated state, his body showing the toll of prolonged starvation.

“He was dangerously dehydrated, as expected, and immediately placed on an IV drip to stabilise him. X-rays revealed a broken pelvis, likely the result of an accident, but thankfully, surgery is not required at this stage,” said Hingley.
With strict crate rest, pain management, and possible physiotherapy, he will heal over time.
“Initially, Raven displayed fear aggression, growling and trying to evade human contact, but began to relax once he realised he was safe.
“His blood tests came back clear, which is a huge relief, as it means his organs have not started failing, which is a major concern in cases of severe malnutrition,” shared Hingley.
“Though his body is weak, his spirit remains intact, and with the right care, he has a strong chance of full recovery.”
A new beginning
Despite his suffering, Raven has shown incredible resilience. His recovery will involve a specialised diet, pain medication to support his healing and a safe, quiet space for crate rest and rehabilitation.
Malatji, the ‘animal whisperer’, has already formed a bond with Raven, and he accepts gentle massages between his eyes and ears. His road to trust and confidence has begun.
“After everything he had been through, Raven still has it in him to trust again,” Hingley shared. “That is the incredible thing about these animals. They teach us resilience in ways we cannot imagine.”
A forever home
“The long-term goal is to fully rehabilitate Raven physically and emotionally before finding him a permanent home.

“Ideally, he will be placed with someone who understands Sighthounds – their quirks, needs, and incredible spirit. If we cannot find a suitable home, Sighthound Rescue SA has generously offered to care for him permanently,” explained Hingley.
How you can help
Raven’s journey is far from over, and APN needs your help to ensure he gets the care he deserves.
People can donate towards his vet bills, provide food, blankets, and supplies, and help spread the word.
“The more people who hear Raven’s story, the greater the chance of securing the support he needs,” said Hingley.
