Alberton Lions bring Christmas in Winter joy to Katlehong children

The annual Alberton Lions initiative, inspired by Mandela’s love for children, gave young learners an unforgettable day filled with games, meals, prizes and goody bags.

The Alberton Lions Club brought a day of fun, food and festive cheer to vulnerable children during its annual Christmas in Winter event at Abram Hlophe Primary School in Katlehong on August 15.

The initiative, which has been running for about 10 to 12 years, was originally inspired by Mandela Day and former president Nelson Mandela’s love for children.

According to Riekie Foster of Alberton Lions Club, the event was initially planned for July 18, in line with Mandela Day, but was later moved to a later date as the school holidays made it difficult for learners to attend.

The club initially hosted the event at different schools each year to give children from various areas an opportunity to participate.

However, Abram Hlophe Primary School eventually became the permanent venue because of its facilities.
The Lions invited vulnerable learners from primary schools in the area, with principals and educators identifying the children who would benefit from the initiative.

Roughly 10 learners from each participating school attended, depending on the number of schools that accepted the invitation.

The day was packed with activities designed to keep the children entertained, including tattoos, beanbag toss, magnetic fishing, ring toss, a donkey derby, putt-putt and tug-of-war.

The children were also treated to meals and snacks throughout the day. Breakfast included porridge and oranges, while lunch consisted of hotdogs, crisps, muffins, juice and biscuits.

Each learner also received a goody bag to take home. The bags included a sandwich, Easter eggs, a beanie, a toy and chips.

While the Christmas in Winter event remains an important annual initiative, the Lions Club also hopes to provide more targeted assistance to vulnerable families and children through special projects.

Foster said this could include specific support with food, clothing and blankets.

The club plans to continue hosting Christmas in Winter as an annual event, maintaining its focus on giving children a memorable day filled with happiness, food and activities.

“We hope they had the happiest day of their lives,” said Foster.
