Help build a sanctuary, one brick at a time
The Stepping Stone Hospice appeals to the community to support a vital building project.
The Stepping Stone Hospice, which provides compassionate care and support to those affected by life-limiting illnesses in Alberton and the surrounding areas, is excited to share a milestone in its journey.
In SA, according to the Murtagh methods (a diagnostic strategy), an estimated 45-50% of all deaths could have benefited from palliative care.
This is a demand further underscored by the 2021 Quality of Death Index Report, which identifies SA as having a high need for palliative care because of its significant quadruple burden of disease, including HIV, TB, and non-communicable diseases (NCD).
With that in mind, there are at least three hospices affiliated with the Association of Palliative Care Centres (APCC) in the CoE and among those is the Stepping Stone.
Consequently, it is imperative to expand the Hospice to extend its reach, thereby aiding patients and their families in accessing high-quality palliative care services.
In 2024, the five-star APCC-accredited NPO was busy. They cared for 241 patients in their inpatient Aault unit in New Market, registered 238 new patients and had contact with at least 1 044 patients. They also did 636 home visits, averaging about 53 monthly.
Impactful project
The Hospice is endeavouring to improve the quality of life for those in and around Alberton.
“We are raising funds brick by brick to build a 14-bed adult hospice facility on 14 Glen Albyn Street, Raceview, Alberton. With a total project cost of R6m, we know it’s a daunting task, but we’re confident that together, we can make it happen. The proposed project aims to address community development, workforce enhancement and healthcare improvement,” said Tersia Burger, the Hospice founder and CEO.
Their facility on 15 Heidelberg Road, New Market Park, Alberton, which only has eight beds, has limited capacity and outdated infrastructure. Burger said this hampers their ability to deliver the high-quality care their patients deserve.

“The expansion will include the addition of private patient rooms, a family lounge, a quiet room, a nurses’ station, a utility room, a medicine room and upgraded medical equipment. These enhancements will improve the quality of care and create a more welcoming and supportive environment for patients and their loved ones,” she said.
The Hospice requests funding or any form of support to cover the construction costs, medical equipment and initial operational expenses. This investment will enable them to serve more patients annually, reduce wait times, and provide a more holistic approach to hospice care.
“The impact of this project will be profound. We will offer a sanctuary for those in their final stages of life, ensuring they receive the compassionate care they need. The reality is that our hospice is a lifeline for many families in our community,” she explained.
The project is more than just a construction project – it is a promise to their patients and families that they’ll do everything in their power to provide them with the care and support they deserve.
Burger said, “Every donation, no matter how small, is a declaration that our community cares about the most vulnerable among us. I implore everyone to give what they can, and let’s work together to create a beacon of hope for our patients. We’re not just building walls and rooms, we’re building hope – and we need your help to make it happen.”
