Oosrand class of 1980 reunites to honour legacy and inspire future
Decades after walking the school of Oosrand, the class of 1980 reunited for a day filled with noltagia, refelction and a renews commitment to their former school.

Former students of the Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation from the Class of 1980 gathered at Rietvlei Zoo Farm on March 21 for a long-awaited reunion.
More than just a nostalgic get-together, the event paid tribute to the late Mr Philander, a beloved principal who left a lasting impact on the school and its learners.

The day started early at 07:00, with attendees having the option to participate in a 5km or 10km walk before settling in for a bring-and-braai.
Laughter, memories, and stories filled the air as former students and teachers reconnected.
A school that shaped leaders
Archie, a former student, spoke about Oosrand’s unique legacy.

He highlighted that, at the time, it was the only high school on the East Rand that catered specifically to the so-called Coloured community, serving learners from Alra Park, Geluksdal, Reiger Park, Eden Park, and Dikhatole (Germiston).
Despite the challenges of the era, the school produced exceptional professionals who went on to make their mark in various fields.

Among its most notable alumni are:
• Andrew le Roux – one of South Africa’s first foreign diplomats of colour
• Dr Boris Wilkinson – among the first coloured dentists in SA
• Dr Anthony ‘Tony’ Andrews – The first coloured doctor to set up a practice in Goedehoop Street
• Dr Billy Jacobs – A medical doctor who later specialised in gynaecology
• Judge Colleen Collis – A High Court judge in South Africa
• Benny Louw – Current IDSO in education and a Class of ‘82 graduate
• Audrey Hutton – Deputy director of education
• Henry “Bok” Jeffreys – A respected journalist and former editor of The Beeld and Cape Argus newspapers
According to Archie, many more Oosrand alumni have gone on to achieve success in media, business, law, engineering, and various other fields.

Giving back to Oosrand
While the reunion was a time for reflection, it was also a step toward the future.
Jackoline Van Staade, another former student, shared a vision of reconnecting more alumni and working together to give back to the school that shaped their lives.
