Alberton North businesses struggle with rising crime and informal settlement expansion

Businesses in Alberton North are facing increased crime and security threats due to a nearby informal settlement on land owned by PRASA.

Residents and businesses in Alberton North are grappling with the escalating challenges posed by an informal settlement located in Roxton, which is severely affecting the local economy and safety.

The settlement, situated on land reportedly owned by the Passenger Rail of South Africa (PRASA), is surrounded by key business areas, including First Avenue, Navvi Street, and Union Road.

Business owners are raising serious concerns over rising crime rates and security issues linked to the settlement.
A local business leader, Erika Potgieter, expressed frustration over the lack of intervention by authorities.

“Squatters tamper with infrastructure. They have obstructed the natural flow of stormwater, which has created a hazardous condition. If this issue is not addressed immediately, it could result in severe damage, including the potential collapse of a wall, which could lead to injury or even loss of life,” Erika said.

Furthermore, she said that this matter requires urgent intervention from the municipality to enforce the relevant by-laws and restore the proper drainage system before an irreversible disaster occurs.

The impact on local businesses has been significant.

In the past, some families from the settlement were relocated to the Thinasonke Housing Project, 7.5km outside Alberton, but many returned due to a lack of proper safeguards. This has led to further land invasions and the continuation of the problem.

The City of Ekurhuleni has acknowledged the ongoing issue and reiterated that PRASA is responsible for safeguarding the land to prevent illegal occupation.

The city also emphasised the need for PRASA to provide alternative land for relocation.

The situation remains unresolved, and the city is actively engaging with PRASA to find a lasting solution.

PRASA has been contacted for comment, as it plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by businesses and residents alike.
