Jean’s love for her son knows no bounds

A brave mother found a way to be part of her son’s wedding, even from her hospital bed and was able to celebrate a momentous occasion thanks to Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services.

The fact that love conquers all, even in the face of adversity, has proven to be true when Jean Saul was able to ‘attend’ her son James’ wedding in a way that will be remembered for years to come.

Despite being confined to her bed due to her ongoing battle with cancer, Jean, who is a brave patient of Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services, was determined to be part of her son’s special day. She was convinced that nothing would stop her from being part of this momentous occasion.

With the support of Stepping Stone, Jean was able to virtually attend the wedding, which took place in Pretoria over the weekend.

Dressed in white with flowers in her hair, she looked radiant as she joined her son’s wedding celebration from her bed at the NPO’s inpatient unit in New Market.

Surrounded by her close friends, she made a heartfelt toast to the newlyweds, her voice filled with emotion.

“I was deeply emotional on the morning of my son’s wedding. I couldn’t bear the thought of missing his and his bride’s special day. But thanks to Stepping Stone, I was able to be part of it, even from my bed. They were so kind, ensuring that I didn’t miss this important day,” Jean said.

Her presence, though virtual, was a testament to the power of love and family, proving that love knows no bounds.

“I’m so grateful to Stepping Stone for making this possible. I wasn’t in the best state to attend the wedding, but despite facing significant challenges, I remained determined to be part of my loved ones’ lives. I cried on the morning of my son’s wedding since I realised I wasn’t going to attend it in person,” she said.

Jean’s story is a shining example of the resilience and courage that define the human spirit.

As Jean continues her journey with cancer, she is surrounded by the love and support of her family and the dedicated team at Stepping Stone Hospice.

“We are honoured to have been part of this special day and to have enabled Jean to participate in a way that brought her so much joy. It’s a privilege to witness the love and dedication within our community. Jean’s experience is a reminder that hospice care is not just about physical support but also about nurturing the emotional and spiritual well-being of patients and their families,” said Tersia Burger, founder and CEO of Stepping Stone Hospice.
