Frustration grows over neglected Kromvlei Cemetery as grass obstructs graves
Despite several complaints and enquiries about the overgrown grass in Kromvlei Cemetery, residents are still left with promises of maintenance.
In March, one of the residents who visited Kromvlei Cemetery stated that residents can’t even walk to their loved ones’ graves because of the overgrown grass.
This was after complaining many times and having three different municipal reference numbers.
On May 21, residents are still complaining about the poor condition. A frustrated resident who buried her son and brothers at the cemetery expressed her concerns in a heavy tone.
“When I got to the cemetery, it was really bad. You can’t even see the grave numbers, you can’t see the graves, and you can’t walk through the passage because it’s overgrown with grass,” said Heila Byrnes.
Byrnes said the situation at the cemetery is appalling and that the municipality should do something.
“They should ask people in jail to clean it up if they find it difficult to do so. Many people are buried there, and it’s sad to witness such conditions,” she added.
The Alberton Record contacted CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini for a comment.
“The cleaning of the cemeteries is underway. It will be cleaned soon, and I can promise they are coming to clean it,” he said.
Byrnes, on the other hand, tried to report the situation to the City of Ekurhuleni customer care line, but she was told twice that Kromvlei Cemetery falls under the City of Johannesburg, and she was not helped.
