Department of education to appoint law firm over Alberton learner’s tragic death

The Gauteng Education Department is finalising the process of appointing an independent law firm to probe the death of a Grade 3 learner in Alberton.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that it is in the process of appointing an independent investigative law firm to probe the tragic passing of a Grade 3 learner from Alberview Primary School in Alberton.

It is alleged that the learner sustained an injury while playing on the school field and later died at the hospital on August 1.

According to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona, “A Grade 3 boy learner was allegedly injured while playing with friends on the field during break at Alberview Primary School. Consequently, the paramedics rushed the child to a medical facility, and he was unfortunately declared dead. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the school community at large during this difficult period.”

The GDE said its Psycho-Social Support Unit had been deployed to the school to provide trauma support and counselling for all affected.

Mabona said the independent investigation will look into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Once the law firm is on board, the family and other stakeholders will be formally engaged.

“We express our deepest condolences to the family, his school community, and all who knew him. In our pursuit of ensuring the safety and well-being of our learners across all schools, we expect this investigation to provide detailed facts around this incident. We are hopeful that this investigation will uncover the facts behind the learner’s passing, ensuring accountability,” said MEC Chiloane.
